The Growing Threat of Antimicrobial Resistance

Antimicrobial Resistance

FAQ

1. Should I take antibiotics for a cold or flu?

No. Colds and flu are caused by viruses, and antibiotics only work against bacteria, so they won’t help and can contribute to resistance.

2. Does the use of antibiotics in animals affect human AMR?

Yes. Antibiotics used in animals, often similar to those used in humans, can select for resistant bacteria that may transfer to humans through direct contact or consumption of contaminated food and water.

3. What is antimicrobial stewardship?

Antimicrobial stewardship refers to coordinated efforts to optimize the use of antimicrobials to improve patient outcomes, reduce resistance, and decrease unnecessary costs.

4. What organizations are involved in addressing AMR globally?

Key organizations include the World Health Organization (WHO), Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), and World Organization for Animal Health (OIE), among others.
